This may feel like odd advice considering we are told that a yes woman/man is not the type of person we want to be around but nothing could be further from the truth.
Look at it this way: We would rather see you be around people that are over confident, or dare we say cocky, than people who are under confident. The world can feel like a negative, uninspired place filled with people that enjoy saying no more than any of us would prefer.
You want to surround yourself with individuals who are encouraging, positive and willing to say yes to your ideas and unique outlook on life. When you seek confirmation that your latest business idea is good you want encouragement. You want to hear yes. When you ask others if you are able to truly travel the world the way you want, you need to hear “yes”.
Trust us, when you step out of the norm and start living an un-conventional lifestyle (like leaving good, stable jobs to travel the country and move to Belize for no apparent reason) you’re going to hear a lot of negativity and people telling you that it can’t be done. Even if you 100% believe in your dreams, goals and ambitions, you’re going to want some positive outside affirmation that what you’re doing is possibly and awesome. That’s why you need a “yes woman.”
In reality we want to be around people who are balanced. A person that has the ability to really communicate to us in a way that shows us as many sides of our thoughts and ideas, both good and bad, as possible. But if given the choice to be around the person that is willing to say yes one hundred times or the person that always is saying no, pick the yes person. Get a yes (wo)man.
Better to have a yes man than a negative Nancy.
In a few days, we’ll post some thoughts on what types of people make the best “yes women” and how to find them and bring them on your side.
